The speech and language therapist assesses, diagnoses and treats swallowing difficulties and communication difficulties. The Speech and Language Therapist will also do the following:
- Determine what food and drink is safe for you to swallow. The SLT will also provide therapy if your swallow has been affected by stroke.
- Evaluate a person’s ability to communicate and interact effectively. Therapy takes many forms, including directly targeting speech and language as well as maximising communication potential through speech, writing, drawing and gesture.
- Helps the person and their family come to terms with changes in communication.
