Communication

While a person may have a speech and/or language difficulties often many other communication skills are retained or preserved.

We communicate in many different ways not just through the words we use. Communication involves listening skills, good eye contact, gesture (i.e. using your hands when you talk), facial expression, as well as talk / speech.

Speech and language therapy aims to enable the person to use all such communication skills in getting messages in and out. People who have these problems (aphasia) are still intelligent and can make decisions once facilitated in the appropriate way.
