Feeding tubes

It is common to have a feeding tube in the early stages to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia. This tube may be inserted either through the nose (naso-gastric tube or NG tube) or through the abdomen into the stomach (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG tube).

The tube also helps ensure that the person’s nutrition and hydration is adequate. These tubes can be easily removed if / when the dysphagia resolves.
